Here comes the rain again…

Posted on: August 27, 2010

This was her favorite way to pass time – sitting on the window sill! The view was nice – open ground right below, endless roads, traffic thoroughfare and a small cricket stadium not so far. She just wanted to see cars, buses and autos pass by and count them as they passed. An elephant or a horse was a rare sight, to be accompanied by shrill but sweet exclamations of excitement. For a four year old, this was the most productive way to spend a day. So lunch time would drag on for a couple of hours, but the questions never ended, just like the vehicles that seemed to always want to go somewhere.

She tugged onto her grandmother’s dress. “Grandma, come sit here with me” she said. “No sweetheart, grandma is tired now, she wants to sleep. Come we’ll lie down and I’ll tell you a story”, said grandma. “I’ve slept already. Come sit with me here.. don’t sleep!”, she insisted.

“Why is it so hot today?

Why does it not rain?

Why oh why? Ask if I may?”, she asked in her sing-song voice.

Grandma smiled at the little one – “I’ll stay for a little while, but you have to promise me that you’ll let me sleep after that”. “Okay, you sleep after some time; I’ll do paintings with grandpa”, she said.

So grandma sat on the window sill with the little one on her lap. She kissed her on her forehead and started singing.

“Look at the grass drying to a yellow

Look at the trees swaying

The fragrance of flowers is mellow

Look at the butterflies playing

These are signs of things to come

Let’s wait for the clouds to gather

In the blue sky’s dome

Balls of cotton carrying water

Look, here comes the rain again

In time to cool the scorching earth

And our little angel smiles again

Full of joy, full of mirth”

Grandma paused. When she looked at the girl she was fast asleep. She gently picked her up and placed her on the bed. “So much for her plans of painting”, thought Grandma.

When she woke up it was dark, she let out a small cry and then a gasp! “Grandma, Grandmaaa… look, look, look. There are dark clouds in the sky! Here comes the rain again… “
